The Times reported the president made the comments after adviser Stephen Miller gave him a list numbering the immigrants from certain countries who had received visas during the Trump presidency, despite the Republican running on a hard-line anti-immigration platform.

He branded Afghanistan, which had 2,500 of its citizens getting U.S. visa, a terrorist haven.

'It's both sad and telling The New York Times would print the lies of their anonymous "sources" anyway, ' she said.

The Times said its report was the result of more than three dozen meetings.

And the 40,000 from Nigeria would find the United States so appealing, they would never "go back to their huts" in Africa, the president said, according to the paper, which cited officials who were at the meeting or learned about it shortly afterward.

Haiti sent 15,000 people to the U.S.in 2017.

Seizing on immigration as the cause of countless social and economic problems, Mr. Trump entered office with an agenda of symbolic but incompletely thought-out goals, the product not of rigorous policy debate but of emotionally charged personal interactions and an instinct for tapping into the nativist views of white working-class Americans.

The White House Saturday strongly denied a report in The New York Times that claims that President Donald Trump, during private meetings about immigration this past summer, had made insulting remarks about people migrating to the United States from Haiti and Nigeria.

According to the New York Times, Mr Trump fumed to his national security team at the meeting that the number of immigrants arriving was undermining his campaign pledge to erect strong borders.

This was recalled by two officials whose names were not released by the Times because they asked their names remain anonymous, however the newspaper is reporting that the officials "found them so noteworthy that they related them to others at the time".

Although some administration officials acknowledged that the meeting took place, they denied that the president used "AIDS" and "huts" at the meeting.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied the reports Saturday. Tillerson responded by throwing up his arms in frustration and arguing that if he was so bad at his job, maybe he should stop issuing visas altogether, according to The Times.
