Ryanair met with representatives of its Irish-based pilots at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

Update 9pm: The trade union Impact has said it is disappointed that Ryanair bosses would not give them a document confirming the company's recognition of unions, and readiness to negotiate with them in collective bargaining.

Ryanair, meanwhile, said last week they had made a decision to invite unions in Ireland, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal to talks in a bid to avert the planned industrial action.

A spokesman said the prospect of strike action in Ireland, originally called for Wednesday, had not gone away and that the mandate remained should Ryanair not properly meet requests for union representation.

When asked about whether the prospect of industrial action following the talks had receded or increased, Mr Harbor said "the ball is in Ryanair management's court".

The Dublin meeting marks the opening of a season of talks for Ryanair, which will meet German and Portuguese pilots this week before other appointments around Europe in early 2018.

Michael O'Leary said Ryanair "will now deal with our pilots through recognised national union structures".

Last Friday Ryanair surprised customers and staff when it agreed to recognise unions for the first time in its 32 year history.

The low-priced carrier said it was making the move to avoid "widespread customer disruptions over Christmas".

He faced pressure after the airline was forced to cancel thousands of flights over botched holiday scheduling.

The airline reversed its long standing policy of refusing to recognise unions last Friday when faced with pilot strikes in Ireland, Italy and Portugal tomorrow.

Hinting at a conspiracy by its competitors, Ryanair initially insisted it had no recruitment issues as it pursues the goal of transporting 200 million passengers annually by 2024.
