Marchionne keeps the pressure on F1 - reiterates quit threat

2018 Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 The new paint scheme is in line with Alfa-Romeo’s corporate colors and features a large Alfa Romeo logo on a red engine cover

Sauber has unveiled its concept livery for the 2018 Formula 1 season, in the wake of its collaboration with FCA brand Alfa Romeo.

Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne has insisted Ferrari's threat to quit Formula 1 amid the proposed 2021 engine regulations and reduction in revenue is "serious", despite increasing his ties in the sport with Alfa Romeo.

However, Ericsson's future had been in doubt after he ended the season as the only driver to compete in every race without scoring a point.

While Marchionne partly orchestrated the recent Alfa Romeo-Sauber partnership, the Ferrari boss claimed the deal would have no influence on the Scuderia's stance in F1 post-2020.

Ferrari's initial threat was based on the proposals for the new engine formula in 2018, the Italian manufacturer particularly concerned at the move towards more standard parts, a move it claims compromises the purity of the sport. Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull - who have considerably larger budgets - have dominated in recent years but Liberty are keen to ensure that doesn't continue with money being split more evenly.

"We have time until 2020 to find a solution which benefits Ferrari", he continued.

Ferrari now receives more revenue from F1 than any other team thanks to a bonus for its commitment to the sport that no other outfit receives.
