We always respect the privacy setting people select when posting a photo on Facebook (whether that's friends, public or a custom audience), so you won't receive a notification if you're not in the audience. Facebook is also adding a new overarching photo and video facial recognition opt out privacy setting that will delete its face template of you and deactivate the new Photo Review feature as well as the old Tag Suggestions that used facial recognition to speed up tagging when friends posted a photo of you. Users can turn facial recognition on or off on Facebook.

The new features debuting will be available everywhere except Europe and Canada, where privacy regulators have previously raised objections to Facebook's auto photo tagging feature, Sherman said.

The idea behind the feature is to "help you find photos that you're not tagged in and help you detect when others might be attempting to use your image as their profile picture", according to Facebook. Face recognition will allow people who use screen readers to know who appears in photos in their News Feed even if people aren't tagged. When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template.

In addition to improved identity management, Facebook is also introducing a way for people who are visually impaired to know more about who is in the photos they encounter on Facebook.

Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, director of applied machine learning at Facebook, notes that if you are in a photo and are part of the audience for the post, you'll now be notified, even if you haven't been tagged.

That, at least, is the worst-case scenario for Facebook's latest feature, which automatically notifies you if anyone uploads a photo that looks like you're in it.

"When it comes to face recognition, control matters". Facebook has a long, very unfortunate history of keeping what you delete and making getting it off Facebook as hard as humanly possible.

"We are now using various signals (like an IP address) to help us proactively recognize this type of account and prevent its owner from sending a message or friend request to the person who blocked the original account", Antigone Davis, Facebook's global head of safety, wrote in a post .

Facebook will also allow users to ignore a conversation in Messenger and move it out of your inbox without having to block the sender.
