Magic Leap finally unveils its first augmented reality goggles

Magic Leap finally reveals its headset: 'Lightwear' will go on sale next year Magic Leap Unveils AR Goggles
Lori Graves | 21 December, 2017, 01:09

On its website, Magic Leap suggested to developers its headset can be used for new ways to shop and explore with 3D objects, project a computer display on any space, play games, connect with other people in a virtual space, and new creative instances.

It was founded in 2011 and is still run by Rony Abovitz, a bioengineer who helped design robotic surgery tools. In 2014, Google invested half a billion dollars, and in February 2016, the company secured another $793 million in Series C funding. The promise of free-form AR experience is still out there and neither Magic Leap or Microsoft have found it just yet.

A Magic Leap spokesperson told Business Insider at the time that these are not Magic Leap's product. It uses lightfield photonics to generate digital light at different depths and blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world.

While the patent states that Magic Leap applied for it in September 2015 and that Magic Leap is the assignee, the company denied it depicts its actual glasses.

Leap One will combine digital animations with the real world. The Magic Leap hardware tracked the movement of his head and eyes, enabling the virtual assistant to make eye contact and follow his movements throughout the room.

"This isn't a pair of glasses with a camera on it". It looks pretty simple at first glance, but Magic Leap says it allows for "six degrees of freedom", haptic feedback, and fast responsiveness. That is, until today, when we got a look at the Magic Leap One. It's also one of the few self-contained AR devices, which is an impressive feat.

Pricing hasn't been announced just yet, but the package will include three pieces: the headset, a power pack, and a controller. The headset includes a tethered device you can clip to your belt that houses the CPU, GPU, and other components. We are more of a premium artisanal computer, " suggesting we are nearly certainly talking about several thousand dollars.

A previous Magic Leap demonstration showed a solar system appearing in front of a user. We're not sure what to make of that claim. Whether or not Magic Leap One can deliver that remains to be seen.

After years of speculation, secretive tech firm Magic Leap has finally unveiled its highly-anticipated "mixed reality" headset.

It's still unclear when Magic Leap will be ready to launch a consumer-focused product, but this is still a big step in the right direction for the company.

The Magic Leap One headset also supports "Soundfield Audio", which is to say that the platform can calculate how audio should interact with the physical world.
