Geoffrey Rush sues Australian paper for `inappropriate behaviour` claim

Geoffrey Rush Is Now Suing The Daily Telegraph For Defamation Geoffrey Rush launches defamation lawsuit against Daily Telegraph newspaper
Melody Ballard | 09 December, 2017, 05:21

Rush has now announced, in a press conference, that he has filed defamation proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against the Daily Telegraph.

'It is an action I am taking in order to redress the slurs, innuendo and hyperbole that they have created around my standing in the entertainment industry and in the greater community, ' he said at his lawyer's office in Melbourne. "They have splashed spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages", Rush said.

Rush told journalists he was seeking "vindication of my good name".

The lawyers claim the article, billboard and headlines had defamatory meaning and made Rush out to be a "pervert" a "sexual predator" and had engaged in "inappropriate behaviour" against another person in the Sydney Theatre Company's 2015 production of King Lear. He did not take questions.

"Mr Rush has not been approached by the Sydney Theatre Company and the alleged complainant nor any representative of either of them concerning the matter you have raised", Nine News reports the letter saying.

The discussion between then-Republican candidate Trump and his son took place after the emails became public, Schiff said . It wasn't even his attorney, it was one of Trump's attorneys. "That's not the objective of attorney-client privilege".

The first complaint is about the newspaper's billboard on November 30, a poster usually seen on the outside of newsagents, which said: "WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Geoffrey Rush in scandal claims, theatre company confirms "inappropriate behaviour".

It comes after the Oscar victor stood down from his role as president of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts in light of the allegations. Rush has denied any wrongdoing.

The Daily Telegraph editor Chris Dore said in a statement that his newspaper had accurately reported that the theater had received the complaint.

Rush's film credits include "Shine", "The King's Speech" and "Pirates of the Caribbean". He is one of the Australia's most respected actors.

The Daily Telegraph has yet to issue comment on the legal proceedings. "We will defend our position in court", Dore said.
