What is unusual is when members of the military publicly come forward, such as a group of former Air Force officers who in 2010 asserted their belief that UFOs visited the bases they were stationed at and caused nuclear-weapons systems to temporarily malfunction.
The Pentagon was investigating the possible existence of UFOs through a multi-million dollar secret program, a USA publication reported by the BBC and the Guardian.
Officials with the program told the NYT they also studied videos of encounters between unknown objects and American military aircraft, including one released in August of an oval object, roughly the size of a commercial plane which was chase by two fighter jets off the coast of Sani Diego in 2004.
Newly declassified footage shows two United States fighter jets chasing an unidentified flying object (UFO) off the coast of San Diego in 2004.
US Senator Harry Reid, who initiated AATIP, said he was proud of the program and what it has tried to achieve. Elizondo and others maintain that despite the absence of government funding, the program has continued its research, with help from the Navy and Central Intelligence Agency.
Of course, while Tom DeLonge has always been involved in furthering the existence of UFOs, aliens, and intergalactic life, in recent years he's managed to really step up his research.
"We do not have the answers, but we have a lot of elements to justify to ask questions", explained Harry Reid on his account Twitter after the publication of the investigation of the New York Times on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Ruby Jaan, 30, locally known as Beauty Jaa, wife of Manzoor Ahmad Mir from Batmurran Shoipian. Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed a rise in civilian casualties this year.
In the meantime, there is an equally troubling if somewhat more terrestrial concern that needs to be raised here, relating to government funding and the way that finances are put to use.
The AATIP lost its funding in 2012 when Department of Defense officials decided there were better ways to spend taxpayers' money. This in and of itself is a worrying trend-the entire UFO tracking project has managed, like the crafts it tracks, to fly under the radar without accountability to the public. Reid insists that setting up the program was entirely his own idea and that it was one of the most important things that he did while in office, as he remains a firm believer in the existence of alien UFOs. "If America doesn't take the lead in answering these questions, others will", Reid wrote.
Most of the money for the programme went to an aerospace research company run by billionaire entrepreneur Robert Bigelow, who is now working with NASA.
Numerous findings remain classified to this date.
The CIA declassified hundreds of documents related to UFO investigations from the 1940s and the FBI has similarly declassified many files relating to Roswell and paranormal investigations.
