Qualcomm suit claims Apple breached contract, shared proprietary info with Intel

Derrick Tucker | 03 November, 2017, 01:09

Qualcomm, which has worked with Apple for a decade, stopped sharing software after Apple filed a federal lawsuit in January accusing Qualcomm of using its market dominance unfairly to block competitors and to charge exorbitant patent royalties, a source said.

Qualcomm's Q4 2017 operating income has dropped by 82 percent compared to Q4 past year as a result of royalty and licensing disputes with Apple and other licensees.

Qualcomm is alleging that Apple violated a software license contract to benefit rival chipmaker Intel Corp for making broadband modems, the latest salvo in their longstanding dispute.

Reuters reported earlier this week that Apple would drop Qualcomm's chips altogether from its iPhones and iPads beginning next year.

In another USA case, Qualcomm alleges that it has six patents developed in the past four years that improve battery life in mobile devices and that 'Apple uses these technologies in its devices but is not paying for them'.

Rose McGowan Faces Arrest Warrant For Alleged Drug Possession
An arrest warrant has been obtained for actress Rose McGowan for felony possession of a controlled substance. McGowan tweeted earlier this month that she was raped by a man with the initials "HW".

Apple responded to this, saying that the company had tried to negotiate before suing and that Qualcomm is abusing its position.

"The Qualcomm modem that could be used in the next generation iPhone has already been fully tested and released to Apple", Qualcomm said in a statement to Bloomberg News.

Revenue from its Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) unit, which includes its chip business that supplies both Android smartphone makers and Apple, rose 13 percent to $4.65 billion.

The new lawsuit is the latest escalation of a long-running legal battle between the two companies.

Recent reports have claimed Apple is planning to ditch Qualcomm completely for the 2018 iPhone handsets, given the recent strife between the two firms.
