Facebook now testing a system that will help end revenge porn

A new effort to combat revenge porn on Facebook encourages users to. send nude photos.

When you send your nude photo to Facebook, what exactly happens to it?

Facebook will then put a digital fingerprint on the image and will block the sensitive image from appearing if someone tries to upload that same image to Facebook or Instagram.

The method of nude photo transmission, and the duration such photos are held, could raise fears submitted images could be intercepted in transit or while stored - moreover, hashing technology can be fooled by users simply resizing or cropping images.

"They're not storing the image, they're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies", the commissioner said.

Facebook's customer support team will then review a blurred version of the image to ensure it's explicit, then "hash" it before deletion.

Grant went on to say that anyone who is concerned their intimate images could end up being posted on Facebook would first need to file a report with her office, who would then share the report with Facebook.

While there are many high-profile revenge porn cases, such as the Blac Chyna-Kardashian case that is now making its way through the courts, there are also many cases that go unreported.

Right now the measure is part of a pilot project in Australia, which Facebook has announced in collaboration a government agency on e-safety headed by Julia Inman Grant. When asked how a photo will look to a Facebook employee once a user uploads it, Weaver said that in order to determine whether an image is objectionable, "it has to be clearly visible".

"Facebook is very hard as well because they don't provide you with a direct line of communication like Google Legal does", he continued.

"Revenge porn" is horrendous enough as it is, without technology companies making the problem worse.

Will Facebook in the US get this technology?

"Publication on Facebook is often the most devastating platform for the victims-they have their friends, family, work colleagues all gathered in one place for maximum humiliation by publication", Alexandra Whiston-Dew, a private client lawyer at British law firm Mishcon de Reya, said in a statement shared with Newsweek. The World Bank estimates that 78.2 percent of the US population uses the internet, meaning that 10.9 million Americans (roughly the populations of New York City and Los Angeles combined) are revenge porn victims.

Facebook had come up with another anti-revenge porn feature in April earlier this year.
