ASCO: Alcohol Linked to Several Types of Cancer

Cancer Doctors Cite Risks of Drinking Alcohol Reduced Alcohol Intake May Prevent The Chances of Developing Cancer: Study
Carol Daniels | 09 November, 2017, 01:20

The American Society of Clinical Oncology, which represents numerous nation's top doctors, is warning people about the ties between drinking and cancer.

"However, the link between increased alcohol consumption and cancer has been firmly established and gives the medical community guidance on how to help their patients reduce their risk of cancer", he said in a society news release.

Doctors said the way to lessen the risk is to drink less or don't start if you do not drink already.

In addition, researchers said that in 2012, approximately 5.5 percent of all new cancer occurrences and 5.8 percent of all cancer deaths globally could be attributed to drinking alcohol. "The Cancer Prevention Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) believes that a proactive stance by the Society to minimize excessive exposure to alcohol has important implications for cancer prevention".

Although heavy, long-term, drinkers were found to have the greatest risks of developing cancer, even modest alcohol consumption may increase cancer risk, researchers said in the publication. While it is okay to drink occasionally (read rarely), you shouldn't be making a habit out of it.

There has been some debate over whether alcohol itself, or other elements come the compositions of various alcoholic beverages are cancer-causing. All forms of alcohol; be it beer, wine, champagne or shots cause the same cancer risk. Dr. Noelle LoConte, lead author of the statement, clarified ASCO's statement in an article for the NY Times. The ASCO defines heavy drinking as "eight or more drinks per week or three or more drinks per day for women, and as many as fifteen or more drinks per week or four or more drinks per day for men". Also saying, "It's different than tobacco where we say, 'Never smoke".

To reverse the trend, ASCO suggests a number of measures to fight cancer deaths from alcohol, including by limiting sales through increased taxes and incorporating alcohol control strategies into cancer patients' care plans.

One way to reduce cancer risk is to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed.

Since then, she said, more and more evidence has accumulated tying alcohol to a broader group of cancers, including colorectal cancer and, in women, breast cancer. She says this "subtle" take on the issue is somewhat less cautionary than the warnings about smoking.
