A 2014 death from a vehicle fire has been blamed on a defective fire extinguisher.
The U.S. government is recalling nearly 40 million fire extinguishers, for fear that the products may not work in an emergency.
The recall includes 142 models with plastic handles and push button "pindicators" that can clog, resulting in a failure to discharge. Some commercial trucks, RVs and boats came with the fire extinguishers also.
In 2014, emergency personnel responded to a auto fire following a crash and could not get their fire extinguishers to work, resulting in a death. While the recall goes back 44 years, no one should keep a fire extinguisher that long.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 37.8 million fire extinguishers because they might not work in an emergency.

The recall covers 134 models of push-button and plastic-handle extinguishers in the USA and Canada made from 1973 through to 15 August of this year. Their nozzles also may detach with enough force "to pose an impact hazard", the CPSC said.
The recall involves two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers: Plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers. The products were sold at many stores, including The Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon.com and others.
The extinguishers were sold in white, silver and red and are either ABC- or BC-rated.
The company says consumers can contact Kidde to request a free replacement.
The full list of model numbers being recalled can be seen on the CPSC website here.
