Eight Niger soldiers and two USA soldiers were wounded, according to a statement by Niger's Army Chief of Staff.

Military officials aren't sure how the missing soldier became separated from the rest of the troops but they do not believe he was captured, CNN says. It withheld publication of this information at the request of the Pentagon, which maintained that its rescue and recovery effort would be jeopardized.

The U.S. service member's body was discovered by Nigerien forces roughly 48 hours after he went missing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday.

"The body of another US service member has been recovered from the area of the attack, bringing the number of USA service members killed in this attack to four", Col. Robert Manning said in a statement.

The Department of Defense released the names of three soliders killed in Niger on October 4th. They were identified as Staff Sergeant Bryan Black, 35; Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson, 39; and Staff Sergeant Dustin Wright, 29.

Islamist militants, including al-Qaeda fighters, operate in the region.

"Any time one of the members of our great military are injured, wounded or killed in action, that is certainly something that we take very seriously", she said, adding that "our thoughts and prayers are with those individuals".
