Russian election propaganda also appeared on Google, YouTube and Gmail, report says

Gmail app Google, Facebook and fake news

Google began the investigation after Congress asked tech companies to help determine how Russian agents used social media to influence the election.

According to the report, the ads did not appear to be purchased by the same Kremlin trolls who overwhelmed Facebook with propaganda and fake news - suggesting that the Russian cyber attacks might be even more extensive than previously reported.

Google has downplayed the possibility of Russian influence on its platforms, but launched a probe into the matter, according to the Post.

Google's discovery is significant as well because the advertisements do not seem to be from the same farm of trolls affiliated with the Kremlin that bought Facebook ads, which is a sign that the effort in Russian Federation to spread online disinformation might be far broader of a problem than first thought by companies in Silicon Valley. "Calling [the idea of disinformation on Facebook] insane was dismissive and I regret it", he said late last month.

The company had previously said it had found no evidence of this kind of activity. There, approximately 470 accounts tied to known Russian trolls purchased 3,000 ads, totaling about $100,000.

Hackers May Have Had Access to John Kelly's Phone for Months
It's unclear how bad the hack is, or where Kelly's phone was infected with the malware. They are also uncertain of what data could have been seen or stolen.

As of now, there have been no comments from Google or Alphabet on the development. Last week, the social media titan reported it found 2,200 advertisements linked to other Russian operatives, not the Internet Research Agency organization it identified earlier.

Google earlier denied that Russian Federation used its platform to influence the presidential elections with spokeswoman Andrea Faville saying Google is "always monitoring for abuse or violations of our policies and we've seen no evidence this type of ad campaign was run on our platforms". Ads were apparently discovered on YouTube as well as search, Gmail and the DoubleClick ad network run by Google.

This is the first time Google has been reported to admit to evidence of this activity. Some Democrats plan to introduce legislation to require internet companies to disclose more information about political ad purchases on their platforms. Those accounts bought advertising to promote those messages and reach a bigger audience within the Facebook universe, while promoting the incendiary posts to different locations or people with established political leanings for maximum impact.

Executives for Facebook and Twitter will testify before congressional investigators on November 1.
