Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith and player leadership will attend league meetings next week to discuss how to progress on social issues and discuss the subject of protesting during the anthem in a larger scale.

Matthews recently posted a picture of himself saluting on Instagram with a picture of his deceased brother superimposed over his likeness.

When the Tennessee Titans' wide receiver was asked on Twitter yesterday whether he would remain in the locker room or face a fine if the NFL were to mandate that players stand during the anthem, Matthews bluntly tweeted back, "no, I will be done playing football".

The Titans remained in the locker room during the anthem before their Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Matthews' profile photo on Twitter is of his brother, Christopher Ruiz, a marine who died October 2, 2015 while serving in Afghanistan. The Titans receiver has spoken out about how the National Football League protests have been hijacked by people focusing on the disrespecting the flag narrative.

Shortly after Kaepernick began to protest during the anthem, Matthews publicly criticized his former college quarterback, in part because of his brother.

And although he technically has not been kneeling, Matthews told ESPN: 'I plan to kneel until the president apologizes for the comments that he made, because I felt like those were very disrespectful comments'. "You have that right, that freedom of speech, and you're not allowing that to happen". Mularkey said he did not see it being an issue going forward.

"Sometimes people, as you all know, tweet some ignorant things out at some moments and that was an ignorant thing I tweeted out at that given moment", Matthews said. 'Just shows you we still have a long way to go in this country, but I believe in this country and we'll eventually get it corrected.
