The ministry said in a statement that 15 terrorists were either killed or injured in the armed clash, adding that 13 policemen and officers were also injured.

More than 50 Egyptian security forces have died during a clash with Islamist militants in the Western Desert.

Hasm has claimed multiple attacks since 2016 on police, officials and judges in Cairo. He also commanded the armed forces and police for saving Egypt over the past years from meeting the same fate of countries plagued with terrorism, the presidency statement said.

The suspected fighters tried to flee after the exchange of fire there, the sources said, and continued to shoot at a second security unit called in for back-up from atop neighbouring buildings.

Meanwhile, security raids killed hundreds of militants and arrested a similar number of suspects as part of the country's anti-terror war.

Officials said, the policemen were killed in exchange of fire with the terrorists in el-Wahat desert in Giza yesterday.

He too said eight other security personnel were wounded in the attack.

While the forces were moving towards the area, they were ambushed by militants who fired rocket-propelled grenades and detonated explosive devices.

Egypt has been fighting against a wave of terror activities that killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers since the military toppled former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

No group immediately claimed involvement in Friday's attack.

Egypt has been battling an insurgency since 2013 when the military deposed Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, in a coup.

Egypt has been under a state of emergency since April when a twin church attack killed scores.
