In a statement, the MoD acknowledged that the soldiers in the remote Maiwand district of Kandahar province were targeted by the Taliban in twin suicide vehicle bombings followed by an armed assault.

Taliban forces almost wiped out an entire Afghan army post on Wednesday, killing 43 soldiers when they stormed a base with suicide bombers in the strife-torn southern province of Kandahar.

A suspected United States drone fired two missiles at alleged hideouts of militants in Afghanistan's Paktia province and killed four militants.

Channel 1 TV News reported that the Afghan Ministry of Defense confirmed that there was an attack on a base of the Afghan National Army in Kandahar.

Just two soldiers were known to have survived unscathed, with nine wounded and six unaccounted for, officials said, underscoring the shocking casualties that Afghan security forces have faced in their struggle to beat back the insurgents. Six Afghan army soldiers from the base are also reportedly missing. "Unfortunately there is nothing left inside the camp", defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told the BBC.
