President Trump Reneges Paris Agreement Withdrawal

Smart Energy Decisions climate change adaptation By Joshua S Hill

Donald Trump is still planning to pull out of the Paris climate change agreement unless the United Nations can offer 'better terms, ' despite claims to the contrary, the White House has said.

After a succession of mixed messages on the U.S. stance on climate change, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday that the Trump administration was seeking "ways in which we can work with partners in the Paris climate accord".

"What the president has said is that we are withdrawing from the Paris accord".

"While we understand that the U.S.'s position on the Paris Agreement has not changed, we are pleased that they continue to engage", said Canadian Environment Minister Catherine McKenna.

"There has been no change in the United States' position on the Paris agreement", White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in an email.

The decision to leave the agreement drew support from many Republicans, but condemnation from the other side of the aisle and around the world.

Trump has said the Paris accord is soft on leading polluters like China and India, putting US industry at risk.

"We are out of road because in the past the approach taken to the problem of North Korea and the Kim regime over decades has been to enter into long drawn-out negotiations that then deliver an unsatisfactory agreement - an agreement that then the North Korean regime breaks", he said.

"The president made a decision to pull out of the Paris accord because it's a bad deal for the American people and it's a bad deal for the environment", he said on "Fox News Sunday".

'They have also made clear that they have no intention to renegotiate or develop a parallel track to Paris'.

European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete told reporters the United States plans to review the deal more closely for a better understanding of the terms agreed to by former President Barack Obama in 2015.

Arias said he and other officials involved with the Paris agreement would meet on the margins of this week's United Nations General Assembly in NY to determine what the "real US position" was.

During his June announcement, Trump downplayed the prospects of finding areas of agreement with other participating countries.

Meanwhile, national security adviser H.R. McMaster said Trump would "certainly" consider an agreement for sticking with the deal if it "benefits the American people".

"The Paris agreement should not be renegotiated", he said.

He said the United States' voluntary commitment to the deal was "really out of balance" relative to other economies.

On Monday, the Minister and several other climate ministers are scheduled to meet in NY with Gary Cohn, head of Mr. Trump's National Economic Council.

Trump has been critical of the United Nations in the past, particularly what his administration calls an unfair bias against Israel. In other words, Trump always had the right under the agreement to change and even weaken the US pledge.

The State Department announced last month that the USA would continue participating in worldwide climate change negotiations, including talks aimed at implementing the Paris pact, "to protect us interests and ensure all future policy options remain open to the administration".
