North Korea conducts sixth nuclear test, confirms Japan

Consecutive earthquakes in North Korea suggest latest nuclear test North Korea Reveals Shocking Images Of Possible H-Bomb Warhead
Andrew Cummings | 03 September, 2017, 20:11

If the initial data holds, it would make it the most powerful weapon that North Korea has ever tested, according to U.S. officials.

The natural disaster was felt in northern China in Yanji, near the North Korean border, according to local media.

Earlier in the day, North Korea claimed that it has developed a hydrogen bomb that can be mounted on an ICBM.

South Korea and Japan said the North may have conducted a sixth nuclear test, according to reports from the Blue House and Kyodo.

North Korea last tested a nuclear device about a year ago. North Korea asserts that no radioactive material leaked out during the test.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the test "absolutely unacceptable". That would be 3:30 p.m.in Seoul and Tokyo, and 2:30 a.m. EDT.

Previous nuclear tests have triggered artificial earthquake's here in the past.

The bomb was portrayed as part of North Korea's stated program to build a nuclear arsenal capable of reaching the United States' mainland.

Seoul's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, said there had been talks with Washington about deploying U.S. strategic military assets to the Korean peninsula. That was revised up from an initial report of 5.6.

China has expressed annoyance at North Korea's frequent ballistic missile launches, but analysts have said China probably would not take serious action - unless there is another nuclear test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un provides guidance on a nuclear weapons program in this undated

Kim's regime has produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit atop its missiles, surpassing a key technological hurdle, the Washington Post reported August 8, citing an Defense Intelligence Agency analysis completed in July. "But the North Korean people pay a very high price for this".

The atomic test came only hours after the nuclear-armed nation announced it had finally developed an advanced thermonuclear hydrogen bomb small enough to fit on an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea is suspected to have carried out yet another nuclear detonation as a quake of magnitude 6.3 was detected from the test site region.

According to the USGS, the seismic activity - which the scientific agency has not identified as an quake per se - occurred 24 kilometers east northeast of Sungjibaegam, North Korea.

A hydrogen bomb, also called a thermonuclear weapon, produces a much more powerful blast than atomic weapons like the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

If the explosion proves to have been triggered by a nuclear blast, it will be the rogue nation's sixth such test and its first with U.S President Donald Trump in power.

North Korea's latest claim on a hydrogen bomb could not be verified.

Sunday's statement by the state-run Korean Central News Agency will raise already high worries on the Korean Peninsula and in Washington that the North is closer to its goal of an arsenal of viable nuclear ICBMs that can reach the US mainland.

While some experts are sceptical of the hydrogen claim, the latest announcement from North Korea has heightened political tensions, coming just days after it launched a ballistic missile over Japan and sparking global condemnation.
