Head of Data and Public Relations Information Center of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho explained that the increase in numbers of evacuees is caused by people living in potentially unaffected and safe areas are also fleeing their homes to evacuate.

Mount Agung is located about 75 km from the tourist hub of Kuta.

While there are plentiful stocks of food, water, medicines, and other supplies, evacuees fear they are in for a long wait that could disrupt their livelihoods.

More than 80,000 people in the district of Karangasem, the nearest to the volcano, and beyond, have been evacuated in recent days in temporary shelters, while the seismic activity is strong.

Local animal husbandry officials are attempting to evacuate the rest but it's slow going partly because of the limited number of trucks available and have removed only about 1,400 so far.

Five mobile sirens have been installed in the danger zone to warn residents in the event of an eruption.

Officials estimate there are at least 30,000 cows within a 12-kilometre radius of the mountain's summit, and efforts to relocate them are ongoing.
