Irma is expected to be a major hurricane when it moves closer to the Lesser Antilles over the next few days, producing rough surf and rip currents.

Irma was near latitude 18.0 north, longitude 47.5 west, or about 820 nautical miles east of the Leeward Islands, and was blowing maximum sustained winds of about 115 mph with higher gusts.

The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory Thursday about Hurricane Irma, the ninth named storm of the season, which by Thursday afternoon had a maximum sustained wind speed of 100 miles per hour. The hurricane is now about 1,800 miles from the Leeward Islands and about 3,100 miles from Southwest Florida.

Hurricane Irma has the potential to become one of the strongest hurricanes of the 2017 season. Irma has made a slight turn to the north and was moving to the WNW at 12 miles per hour. It will have plenty of time to travel over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

"Since 1965, there have been 44 hurricanes that formed this far east and only five that have made landfall in the United States", Sovine said.
