Google appeals $2.7 billion European Union fine

Google antitrust Ellington Financial book value stable in August

Brussels accuses Google of giving its own service too much priority in search results to the detriment of other price comparison services, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia.

The firm was given 90 days to stop the "anti-competitive" practices, which ends on 28 September, or they could face a five per cent fine, amounting to their average daily global earnings from their parent company, Alphabet.

The company has submitted plans on how it plans to stop favouring its shopping service and these are now being reviewed by Brussels. The company declined to give further details of its appeal.

It is anticipated to take years before the Luxembourg-based General Court rules on the case.

Following the ruling, Google said it "respectfully" disagreed and was considering whether to appeal.

In an interview with AFP, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager last week said some of that proposal "pointed in the very right direction", but could only be judged once in effect. "And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation".

The Commission is reviewing its Google Shopping decision in light of the ECJ's Intel ruling, according to Reuters.

Earlier last week, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager said Google's proposals to comply with the European Union order to modify its shopping service was pointed in the "right direction".

European regulators are also expected to levy further fines in separate cases over Google's Android smartphone software and its AdSense advertising business as early as next month.

The EU is now also investigating whether Google tried to squeeze out its rivals in online search advertising and through its Android mobile operating system.
