US Department Of Agriculture Staff Told To Avoid Saying "Climate Change"

Staff in the U.S. government have been told to avoid using the term climate change, with "weather extremes" preferred, as part of Donald Trump's war on science.

According to The Guardian's report, Bianca Moebius-Clune - the Natural Resource Conservation's director of soil health - the modeling of rising temperatures won't change, simply the wording.

USDA office staff have been instructed to drop the term "climate change" from their published writings and correspondence and use the term "weather extremes" instead, The Guardian reported exclusively Monday. Likewise, the preferred phrasing for "climate change adaption" is now "resilience to weather extremes".

She also said that the term "reduce greenhouse gases" was to be avoided and called "build soil organic matter, increase nutrient use efficiency" instead, while "sequester carbon" was to be replaced by "build soil organic matter".

Moebius-Clune shared that the new language was given to her staff and suggests it be passed on. In an email, Moebius-Clune explains that a colleague from USDA's public affairs team advised her to "tamp down on discretionary messaging right now".

President Donald Trump has said since his campaign that he does not believe climate change is man-made and has backtracked on the previous administration's moves, including the Paris Agreement and the Keystone pipeline ban.

He fired a respectable 4-over-par 74, picking up birdies on a pair of Par-5s and saving par with numerous long putts. There was lots of talk that he was stealing a spot from a deserving pro, and that he would be lucky to break "85".

The alleged suggestions, dated February 16, came less than a month after Trump was sworn into the White House, as further agency emails reveal senior employees were told a policy change may be on the horizon. Namely, that priority is climate change.

Employees were understandably confused, and some were against the change - including one employee who expressed a desire to maintain scientific integrity.

The Trump aide has also said climate change is "simply a mechanism for transferring wealth from one group of people to another". "Please visit with your staff and make them aware of this shift in perspective within the executive branch".

The emails, dated from earlier in 2017, were sent internally to staffers at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a small agency at the USDA that's tasked with maintaining the health of United States soil, air, and water for farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners.

The president continues to appoint former industry lobbyists and climate deniers to top posts in government agencies, including the USDA's chief scientist position. The USDA website still points visitors to a Climate Change Program Office as well as a "climate change adaptation plan", among other climate change-related pages.

The USDA has not, however, scrubbed all mentions of "climate change" from its web presence.
