Microsoft Surface Has Lots of Reliability Issues, Claims Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports pulled its Microsoft Surface tablet and laptop recommendations Consumer Reports pulled its recommendation of Microsoft Surface tablets and laptops

Consumer Reports removes its "recommended" designation on Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface devices.

"A number of survey respondents said they experienced problems with their devices during startup", Consumer Reports says.

Unless some Surface Pro owners who have the device for more than two years says so, the report from Consumer Reports is up for debate.

The spokesperson added that "Microsoft Surface Pro is designed and built with performance and reliability in mind" but has not yet clarified the "reliability improvements" made within the past two or three years.

"We've found that reliability is a major factor for consumers deciding on what tablet or laptop to buy", Simon Slater, the magazine's survey manager, said in a statement. Time will only tell if their claims are valid despite the fact that they have done the same on other leading brands (i.e. Tesla and Apple).

Microsoft entered the hardware market with its first Surface tablet in 2012. "Based purely on lab performance, the Surface Pro is highly rated when used either as a tablet or with a keyboard attached", the release said.

More specifically - and, arguably more importantly - the move was made in response to annual subscriber surveys between 2014 and early this year citing "two-year breakage rates of 25%". The power and form factor of Microsofts Surface line are almost unparalleled but if they can't consistently pump out devices that don't experience immediate defects past the normal wear and tear, I don't think their will be many people that remain loyal to the brand.

It is not unlikely that an average user might run into one of these flaws with their Surface device at least once.

This is the first time in two years Consumer Reports removed a laptop recommendation when it pulled ratings for three Hewlett-Packard models and a Lenovo laptop due to fix histories. Jerry Beilinson, the electronics editor at Consumer Reports, advises that "If you are very concerned about how long your products are going to last, it might be better for you to go with a brand that has a higher predicted reliability". Frozen computers, unexpected shutdowns and unresponsive screens were noted as complaints.

Some owners reported their Microsoft devices froze or shut down.
