Home to more than 2 million apps, there is a perception among some quarters that the Google Play Store is home to low quality apps, or at least much lower quality than those found in Apple's App Store. Google wants to promote those apps that are of high-quality, which means high user ratings and hardly any glitches or crashes.

It's no secret that Google's Play Store is chock full of crappy apps - just drop the word "guide" into the search bar and see for yourself - and Google itself knows it, too.

Google has revealed it taking steps to try to reduce the amount of crappy apps which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

The Google Play Store was updated with support for Notification Channels earlier this week, with the Mountain View, California-based tech giant still being in the process of distributing the latest version of its Android app marketplace to all users. Apps that frequently crash, eat up excess battery, or render slowly will find themselves much lower in Play Store searches. Higher quality apps will be ranked accordingly by Google's updated algorithm, even if the number of installs has pushed an unstable app to a position it doesn't deserve. This will further push these apps down in the ratings.

Google is also making available a tool called Android Vitals in the Google Play Console to help app makers learn how their app behaves and find the key points they need to address to improve app performance. The company will penalize such apps by demoting them in its search rankings. And according to it, the results have been positive: higher quality apps (as per Google's definition) have seen an increase in usage and decrease in uninstalls.

The decision by Google to roll out an algorithm that weeds out the bad apps comes at a time when global app downloads continue to defy the concept of peak app.
