De Grasse injured, will miss world championships

Usain Bolt is a genius like Muhammad Ali says Lord Coe Meet the world's fastest man this year - and it's not Usain Bolt
Isaac Mcdaniel | 04 August, 2017, 00:37

Athletics great Usain Bolt has joked about his next step when he draws the curtains on his storied career and has zeroed in on professional football with Manchester United.

Bolt, now 30, comes into this London edition of the World Championships, not as a sensation heralding a revolution, but instead hanging onto his empire against the challenge of Father Time and young pretenders.

The Jamaican sprint ace, who will be hunting his fourth World Championships 100m title, will don the purple and gold running shoes before hanging up his spikes forever.

The half-lap event now looks increasingly likely to be another straight fight between Van Niekerk and Botswanan Isaac Makwala, who are beginning to carve out a special rivalry over both 200m and 400m.

"Every year you find something else to motivate you", he said.

"The seven people who are going to be in that race with me, they're the biggest challengers", he said.

"Personally I think it was there (rock bottom). It's a semifinal.' But I think he wanted to push me". It's on its way back up now.

"You can't be happy about doping at all, it's not good for the sport".

"It's definitely a good space to be in, it's great to see the guys supporting me as an athlete and backing the athlete I'm becoming and also the belief I'm receiving when it comes to what I'm doing shows I'm moving in a positive direction as an athlete". For those of you who don't know, just like Usain Bolt, Virat Kohli too is signed by the sports brand Puma.

Yohan Blake is the second fastest man in the world this year - and of all time, behind Bolt.

"The only place track and field has to go is up", Bolt said.

"I expect Andre comes out stronger from this, and we're definitely going to learn, us as a team and me as a coach, I'm going to learn a lot from what's gone on here in the last few days".

"I always try to take a negative and put it into a positive and try to work forward, you know what I mean?"

Jamaica's Olympic 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson will race only the shorter distance in London as she seeks a first individual world title.

The unknown quantity is 21-year-old USA college student Coleman, who's comfortably the fastest in the world this year at 9.82 seconds but who still sounds a little starry-eyed about the prospect of beating Bolt, calling the idea "crazy".
