US Conducts Successful THAAD Missile Test

A medium-range ballistic missile was intercepted over the Pacific Ocean early Sunday during a test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, the Missile Defense Agency said.

A ballistic missile was sacked by a US Air Force plane and intercepted over the Pacific by a THAAD system in Kodiak, Alaska, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said Sunday, describing the test as "successful". The THAAD weapon system, located at Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska in Kodiak, detected, tracked and intercepted the target.

The test will help the USA "to stay ahead of the evolving threat", said MDA Director Lieutenant General Sam Greaves in a statement, without elaborating.

The test came the same day that two United States supersonic B-1 bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula, following joint military drills with Japan, in a show-of-force response to North Korea's test-fire of what Washington deemed the isolated nation's second intercontinental ballistic missile on Friday.

The latest launch comes in the wake of North Korea's latest ICBM test. Analysts said flight data from the North's second ICBM test, conducted Friday night, showed that a broader part of the mainland United States, including Los Angeles and Chicago, is now in range of Pyongyang's weapons.

The THAAD system is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere. It said this is the 15th such test for the THAAD weapon system.

The U.S. side prepared for a possible attack from North Korea and China.

Lavrov says Moscow had to react to United States sanctions

GDP Growth in Q2
The increase reflected increased consumer spending, exports, and increased spending by both the federal government and businesses. Prices of USA government debt rose after the release of the data while the dollar initially fell against a basket of currencies.

It was sacked by an Air Force Plane and intercepted by the defense system.

THAAD is a ground-based missile defense system. Moscow and Beijing, in a joint statement, earlier this month called on Washington to immediately halt deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

"If the USA continues to frantically cling on to the so-called "strong sanctions" and military adventures against us, we will respond with firm action of justice that we had already made clear". Following the launch, the US and South Korean militaries responded by firing surface-to-surface missiles amid increasing tensions on the peninsula.

The latest test moves up the timetable of the nation launching a reliable nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile.

"The U.N. Security Council has clear regulations on North Korea's launch activities that use ballistic missile technologies".

The new leader of South Korea, Moon Jae-In, suspended the program's deployment in June, saying a new evaluation of its environmental impact should be conducted.
