"That's why, under President Trump's strong leadership, we have created the Chicago Gun Strike Force and are sending 20 more permanent ATF agents to Chicago, reallocating federal prosecutors and prioritizing prosecutions to reduce gun violence, and working with our law enforcement partners to stop the lawlessness".

Federal law enforcement officials and the Chicago police confirmed Thursday night that about 20 additional agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are being deployed to Chicago to investigate illegal gun trafficking.

The ATF agents work with Chicago and IL state police on a strike force to solve shootings and track down gun traffickers through ballistics technology, the paper said.

The group, including police officers, federal agents and intelligence analysts, will work to impede the flow of illegal guns throughout Chicago and target repeat gun offenders.

The President threatened to send in help early in his administration after months of campaigning against crime in Chicago and other major cities. Collins, the spokesperson for Mayor Emanuel, said the progress Chicago Police have made this year "happened without any of the new resources from the federal government we requested".

In fact, earlier this week, officials announced that the ATF had loaned the city a van outfitted with ballistic testing equipment to help police more quickly solve gun crimes. The number of murders - 320 so far in 2017, compared with 322 at this point past year - has hardly changed.

Through Friday, 1,360 shootings had been reported in the city, about 200 fewer than during the same period in 2016. "1714 shootings in Chicago this year", he tweeted. Last year, more than 60 people were shot and four were killed around the holiday.

Never mind that the Chicago Police Department has earned a reputation as one of the most brutal and racist in the United States. Murders are way, way too high.

Chicago is also in the midst of reforming its police department after a federal investigation found officers routinely violated the civil rights of people, citing excessive force and racially discriminatory conduct. But Chicago was not among them.

In response to questions about Ferguson's comments, Emanuel told reporters on Wednesday that the Justice Department has "walked away" from doing consent decrees, and so the city has sought a different strategy. And he noted that dozens of additional ATF agents had "surged" into Chicago so far this year.

It was not immediately clear whether the announcement Friday will come with additional federal agents or a reorganization of existing resources.
