The study, based on data from the Danish Health Examination Survey 2007-2008 and released Thursday, revealed that people who drink between three and four times a week were less likely to develop diabetes than those who never consumed alcohol.

Wine was considered particularly beneficial, probably because it has chemical compounds that improve blood sugar balance, researchers in Denmark found. We examined the association between alcohol drinking patterns and diabetes risk in men and women from the general Danish population.

Experts have found with alcohol consumption over 3 to 4 week days giving the lowest risks of diabetes. Prof Janne Tolstrup, from the National Institute of Public Health of the University of Southern Denmark and lead researcher for this study said that drinking frequency was associated with diabetes incidence and not the quantity of alcohol consumed.

Men who had 14 drinks a week, or just over nine pints of beer, were found to have a 43 per cent lower risk. Compared to people drinking less than one day each week, men who drink frequently had a 27% lower risk while women had a 32% lower risk, the researchers said. These people were followed through 2012, with an average follow-up of about five years. Over this time period, about 850 men and 890 women developed diabetes.

The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S.is high - 9.4 percent of the population has the disease, with type 2 being the most common.

The authors conclude: "Our findings suggest that alcohol drinking frequency is associated with the risk of diabetes and that consumption of alcohol over 3 to 4 weekdays is associated with the lowest risks of diabetes, even after taking average weekly alcohol consumption into account".

Tolstrup noted the potential protective effect of alcohol seemed to be limited to beer and wine.

There was no connection between binge drinking and diabetes.

"We can see it's a better effect to drink the alcohol in four portions rather than all at once".

For both genders, seven glasses of wine a week lowered the risk of diabetes by 25% to 30% compared with having less than one glass.

"Alcohol has been suggested to increase insulin sensitivity and lower fasting insulin resistance, which might play an important role in the progression of diabetes", she said, according to CBS News. Several risk factors for type 2 diabetes include lifestyle factors, body weight, especially around the waist, and family history.

Moreover, they stressed that regularly drinking alcohol can still contribute to other serious health complications such as liver disease and some types of cancer. Alcohol, of course, can impact mental health too.

Since few participants reported binging, the researchers say their finding of no clear link between binge drinking and diabetes risk may be due to low statistical power.
