Iranian City May Have Notched One of Hottest Temperatures in Earth's History

Iranian city soars to record 129 degrees: Near hottest ever reliably measured on Earth Temperatures in Iran reached 129 degrees Thursday, marking one of the hottest days ever recorded

A city in Iran recorded what may possibly be the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth, when the city of Ahvaz clocked in at 127.4 degrees Fahrenheit (53.0C), and may have even climbed as high as 129.2F (54.0C).

Across the ocean last week, American Airlines had to cancel 45 flights out of Phoenix when temperatures began approaching record temperatures of more than 120 degrees.

Etienne Kapikian, a meteorologist with French weather service Meteo France, posted to Twitter that the temperature officially reached 53.7 degrees Celsius, or 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperatures soared to 129F in the southwestern Iran city of Ahvaz, Thursday, setting a new record for the highest temperature ever recorded during the month of June in Asia.

Weather Underground, however, reported the day-time high for the city -- home to about 1.1 million people - at a sweltering 129.2F at both 4:51 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time.

The highest temperature ever measured on Earth was when Death Valley, California hit a sizzling 134°F in July 1913.

As The Independent reports, there's some ambiguity about the hottest temperature ever recorded, as well as how hot it actually got in Ahvaz, for several reasons.

A picture taken on February 18, 2017 shows a general view of a bridge in the Iranian city of Ahvaz during a sandstorm.

In 2016, Weather Underground weather historian Christopher Burt said such an incredible temperature was "not possible from a meteorological perspective".

The Post said the recent heat waves and record temperatures represent extremes consistent with what climate scientists expect due to the global warming phenomenon in the world.
