Hospital says it would like Charlie Gard to go home if practical

Charlie Gard’s Parents Return to Court For Life Support Hearing The Truth About The Hospital In The Charlie Gard Case
Lori Graves | 26 July, 2017, 01:11

The parents pleaded with the court to let them take Charlie to the USA for experimental treatment.

The 11-month-old British infant has a rare mitochondrial disease. "Today our hearts go out to them as they face the most hard decision that any parent should ever have to make". Charlie's parents have made a decision to stop fighting.

The hospital's lawyer, Katie Gollop, said Great Ormond Street wanted "above all" to fulfill the parents' last wish, but also had to take the baby's best interests into account. Not for the first time the parents through their solicitors raised the prospect of criminal proceedings against the hospital and its staff.

"The care plan must be safe, it must spare Charlie all pain and protect his dignity". The hospital had suggested a hospice option. Among other practical problems, it said, the ventilator would not fit through the front door of Charlie's home.

Very few people who develop the condition in infancy survive to their teenage years, and there is now no known treatment for it. His care can not be simplified.

The hospital defended its decision not to allow experimental nucleoside treatment (NBT) for the child because "from the moment of his diagnosis, Charlie's prognosis was known to be bleak". He is now on life support.

"I wish to thank all of the lawyers in this case who have assisted the court but, in particular, the team who have worked for the parents because they have done it not for financial reward but have given their services free".

Francis has presided over the high-profile case, which revolved around the family's wish to seek medical treatment for Charlie in the United States.

PRO-LIFE COLLEGE STUDENT? LifeNews is looking for interns interested in writing, social media, or video creation. But the hospital where the child is now has raised concerns, saying there are many practical issues to be resolved and that home care would be hard. His parents wanted to take him to the USA for nucleoside therapy. Britain's courts, backed by the European Court of Human Rights, refused permission, saying it would prolong his suffering without any realistic prospect of helping him.

Offers of help for Charlie came from Dr. Michio Hirano, a neurology expert at New York's Columbia Medical Center and from the Vatican's Babino Gesu pediatric hospital.

Connie Yates was in the London High Court for a hearing before Judge Nicholas Francis. "Due to delay, that window of opportunity has been lost". "Had Charlie been given the treatment sooner he would have had the potential to be a normal, healthy little boy".

After a protracted legal battle, the Gards eventually relented when the window for the treatment had passed. We wanted Charlie to have the chance ... "And what you've seen here is a classic case of the British establishment closing ranks and saying, 'we know what is best'". Connie and Chris underscored that they "should have been trusted as parents".
