'Wonder Woman' buries 'The Mummy' at box office

Melody Ballard | 13 June, 2017, 11:48

"Wonder Woman" of Warner Bros. easily remained atop the box office in North America for the second weekend in a row, taking in an estimated 57.18 million US dollars.

The Mummy came in below expectations at $32.2 million for its opening weekend in the us but scored $141.8 million in worldwide markets - marking star Tom Cruise's biggest global opening ever (edging out War of the Worlds' $102.5 million).

As Bleeding Cool reported earlier today, Wonder Woman is estimated to have earned another $57.2 million this weekend, marking a less than 50% drop from its domestic opening. The studio that was built on classics including "Dracula", "The Wolf Man", and "Frankenstein" has already slated a "Bride of Frankenstein" movie for 2019 with half a dozen or so others in the works.

It managed nonetheless to make a strong showing overseas, grossing $141.8 million in ticket sales in 63 worldwide markets, the largest opening ever for a Cruise film, according to Boxofficemojo.com. Tom Cruise's film failed to beat the first-weekend box office collection of DC's fourth installment "Wonder Woman". His star power now shines brightest overseas, where audiences have been more forgiving of the actor's baggage. Just as importantly, it has revived fan excitement for Warner's DC superhero brand on the big screen after fans and critics were largely dissatisfied with last year's "Suicide Squad" and 'Batman v Superman, ' despite good box-office grosses.

The Alex Kurtzman directed film had a dismal 17% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience score wasn't much better.

Now Cruise's chapter arrives with a $12 million opening night, eyeing a $29-31 million weekend. Cars 3 should easily win the weekend with an estimated $55-60 million opening.

Starring Tom Cruise, "The Mummy" registered sales of $32.2 million in US and Canadian theaters, researcher ComScore Inc. estimated Sunday in a statement.

The new film also features Annabelle Wallis, Russell Crowe, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance.

The film has earned $164 million domestically through Thursday night previews and is expected to reach the $500 million mark in coming days. A24's horror release will scare up $6 million from 2,533, which is fine for the low price tag, but below expectations.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, summer's top-grossing movie to date, fell to fifth with $6.2 million ($366.4 million total).
