Woman goes on trial for allegedly urging boyfriend to kill himself

Conrad Roy Conrad Roy
Andrew Cummings | 08 June, 2017, 11:12

Prosecutors have charged Carter with involuntary manslaughter in Roy's death because of the text messages, which told Carter how to use carbon monoxide to end his life and repeatedly told him to do it.

Carter was 17 at the time, and prosecutors said that the teenager sent her "scared" boyfriend text messages and phone calls, pressuring that he kill himself.

Prosecutor Maryclare Flynn said Carter sent 40 text messages to Roy urging him to kill himself.

Even as Carter sent those messages to Roy, she was texting the friends who testified Wednesday that she was anxious about him and was confused about why he had purchased a generator.

The prosecution says Ms Carter helped Roy devise the plan to take his own life, encouraged him to hide it from his parents.

Conrad's mother, Lynn Roy, said she she took a walk on the beach with her son hours before he was found dead but he showed no signs he meant to harm himself. Carter discussed with her boyfriend _ who had long suffered from mental health issues and already attempted suicide in 2012 _ how to do it, where to do it to not get caught, how it would affect his family and how she could help. They say Carter created a "Homers for Conrad" event in the wake of his death, but insisted on making herself the center of attention.

"I helped ease him into it and told him it was okay ..."

The court was also shown some of the transcripts the prosecution says were part of her "game". Another said, "All you have to do is turn on the generator and you will be free and happy". The defense argues it was Conrad Roy who in his own words dragged her into his suicide plans.

Carter waived her right to a jury trial Monday.

"This is a suicide case", he said, "not a not a homicide".

"It was Conrad Roy's idea to take his life". She said her son was having second thoughts about going to college and she told him everything would be fine.

Boardman said she talked with Carter about that eating disorder, but said she became frustrated with her.

According to police, on July 10, 2014, three days before Roy was found dead, Carter began texting and emailing others claiming that he was missing when she knew otherwise. "You're ready. You just need to do it", officials said.

Lynn Roy said Carter reached out to her multiple times after her son's death but never mentioned anything about his suicide plans. Carter was arrested on the charges of manslaughter in the 2014 suicide case that put Roy to kill him to prove in front of his girlfriend.

After Roy's death, Flynn argued, Carter gained the attention she craved by holding a fundraiser and becoming a self-appointed advocate against suicide.

The 18-year-old Mattapoisett man killed himself in July 2014 by carbon monoxide poisoning. Youthful offenders are tried in juvenile court, but the proceedings are public. "So she has to make it happen - she has to make him kill himself so that she's not seen as a liar". "I'm the only one he told things too". "What I think is going to be significant, at least in the facts of this case, is that this was repeated, lengthy electronic communications between two young people".
