Uber moves to repair tainted image with 20 firings, 1 hiring

Uber has fired more than 20 employees amid an investigation looking into sexual harassment claims and workplace culture, according to a report. For the first, Uber hired attorneys at Perkins Coie LLP to look into the sexual harassment claims, which eventually expanded to include 215 claims to human resources including discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying. The results of that investigation were shared with Uber employees Monday. Nine top employees, including Uber's chief spokesperson, president of ridesharing, head of finance and senior vice president of engineering, have left since February. That post kicked off a firestorm of negative publicity for Uber and led to multiple investigations into Uber's human resources operations.

"They're showing that they're going to take some concrete steps to address the matter", said Evan Rawley, a professor at Columbia University's business school.

The post prompted Uber CEO Travis Kalanick to call for an internal investigation. Uber said it had taken remedial action in 58 cases and decided no action was needed on 100 more.

In addition to the sexual harassment allegations, Uber is the target of lawsuits, boycott threats and a federal investigation into claims that it has used a fake version of its app to thwart authorities. It was noted that a majority of these claims arose from the company's San Francisco headquarters. The details were expected to be the likely center of Uber's weekly all-hands meeting, which happens every Tuesday.

Levandowski, a former Google engineer, let the company to set up his own autonomous trucking company, Otto, that was quickly bought by Uber for $680m in 2016. Fowler said she later discovered others had spoken up internally about similar treatment and Uber did little more than issue a warning. The fired employees have not yet been named, nor has the specific reason for their dismissal, and it is unclear whether any more will go in the coming days or weeks. The results of that probe will be released to Uber's board on Tuesday, according to reports.

Uber also is searching for a chief operating officer and chief financial officer as it prepares for a possible public stock offering.

The firings, which were first reported by Bloomberg News, follow an investigation led by Holder.

The company is also in the midst of a major trade secrets lawsuit against Google that threatens its self-driving vehicle ambitions.
