U.S. test-fires interceptor at intercontinental ballistic missile

President Moon Jae-in speaks in a weekly meeting with his senior secretaries held at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae U.S. test-fires interceptor at intercontinental ballistic missile
Andrew Cummings | 01 June, 2017, 01:45

During the test, an ICBM-class target was launched from the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

According to the plan, a 5-foot-long "kill vehicle" released from atop the interceptor zeroed in on the ICBM-like target's mock warhead outside Earth's atmosphere and obliterated it by sheer force of impact, the Pentagon said.

Tuesday's test, which took place over the Pacific, came after a series of successful missile tests by North Korea that demonstrated steady progress in its pursuit of various types of missiles, including a nuclear-tipped ICBM capable of reaching the U.S. "And I'm even more confident today after seeing the intercept test yesterday that we continue to be on that course", Syring said a news briefing. It then fired a missile to intercept it from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The North Koreans have not yet tested an intercontinental ballistic missile but are believed to be planning to.

The Pentagon likens the defensive tactic to hitting a bullet with a bullet.

"In a broad sense, North Korea is one of the reasons why we have this capability", Davis said.

Syring said Tuesday's test was made even more complicated by the use of decoys created to throw off the interceptor.

The system, which launched its first test in 2004, is far from a sure thing: it has been successful in four of nine attempts.

A US interceptor scored a direct hit and appeared to result in the "complete obliteration" of a mock warhead over the Pacific Ocean in what the Pentagon said Wednesday was a realistic test that mirrored the missile threat from North Korea and Iran.

"This is part of a continuous learning curve", Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, recently said. These include the Patriot missile, which numerous countries have purchased from the US, and the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which the USA deployed this year to South Korea to defend against medium-range missiles from North Korea.

GMD is an integral element of the United States' layered ballistic missile defence architecture, with interceptors at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Fort Greely, Alaska.

The North has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of a year ago in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States-something President Donald Trump has vowed "won't happen".

Millions of Southern Californians may feel a bit safer Wednesday after an American rocket successfully shot down an incoming test missile over the Pacific Ocean created to simulate a North Korean nuclear attack.

US President Donald Trump tweeted: "North Korea has shown great disrespect for their neighbor, China, by shooting off yet another ballistic missile.but China is trying hard!"

Laura Grego, senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, which has criticized the missile-defense program, called the interceptor an "advanced prototype", meaning it is not fully matured technologically even if it has been deployed and theoretically available for combat for more than a decade. These include the Patriot missile, which numerous countries have purchased from the US, and the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which the USA deployed this year to South Korea to defend against medium-range missiles from North Korea.

The success of the test is a watershed moment for the United States military's effort to establish an effective-though limited-ground-based defense against ICBMs as the North ramps up its threats.

The article stated North Korea's "nuclear deterrent" has been able to break through the "atrocious" challenges and trials posed by "U.S. imperialists".
