Trump signs 'historic' bill to transform VA

White House: Trump to sign VA accountability bill on Friday Stabbed Officer's Friend Recalls Airport Attack
Owen Mccarthy | 24 June, 2017, 01:27

"We all remember the nightmare that veterans suffered during the VA scandals that were exposed a few years ago", Trump said during remarks in the East Room of the White House.

In addition to making it easier to get rid of under performing employees, the bill also establishes protections for Whistle Blowers from retaliation.

The Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act is created to bring accountability to the Department of Veterans Affairs by expediting the firing process for poorly performing employees, and ensuring appropriate protections for whistleblowers.

Trump cast the signing as a fulfillment of a campaign promise to dismiss VA workers "who let our veterans down".

Supporters and opponents of the bill believe civil servants in other government agencies could use it as a model as they seek to hold employees accountable for misconduct. It will also provide improved protections for whistleblowers, who have proved to be invaluable in uncovering and addressing issues within the department.

Trump says the law represents one of the biggest reforms to the VA in a generation or more.

The legislation, which many veterans' groups supported, cleared the House last week by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 368 to 55, replacing an earlier version that Democrats had criticized as overly unfair to employees.

"So many great Veterans Service Organizations across the country supported this legislation and I am grateful for their help in getting it passed and signed into law". It passed the Senate by a unanimous voice vote.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, called the bill signing "a significant step to reform the VA with a renewed objective and ability to serve our veterans". These bad employees are failing in their duty to serve our nation's veterans, many without disciplinary action, and something needs to be done. As I've said time and time again, the vast majority of VA employees - many I consider friends - are good, hard-working people.

President Donald Trump signs the "Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017" in the East Room of the White House, Friday, June 23, 2017, in Washington.
