Trump calls Comey "cowardly" as more questions on Russian Federation loom in Congress

Owen Mccarthy | 14 June, 2017, 07:11

A Justice Department spokeswoman said Sessions requested the open setting because "he believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him".

Sessions is scheduled to testify Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee and was due for sharp questioning.

It was unclear on Sunday whether the committee planned to question the attorney general on Tuesday in an open or closed session.

A Justice Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity initially said the department expected Sessions to testify in closed session but later stressed that the decision was up to the panel's Republican chairman, Senator Richard Burr. Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee are not happy - other Democrats, too.

How did that White House fence-jumper make it so far?

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said Sunday "there's a real question of the propriety" of Sessions' involvement in Comey's dismissal, because Sessions had stepped aside from the federal investigation into contacts between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Spicer is also refusing to say whether tapes exist of the president's conversations with FBI Director James Comey before Trump fired him.

Senator Ron Wyden of OR, a Democrat who also sits on that panel, said the American public had the right to hear the attorney general's answers.

"You need to testify before both in public", Mr. Leahy said in a tweet.

Trump's getting-back-to-work photo op kicked off a week in which he's under siege due to the Russian Federation investigation. Lawmakers, including Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate and to determine if Sessions committed perjury.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is preparing to face former Senate colleagues over his role in the controversy around ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

JOHNSON: Yeah. The attorneys general for Washington, D.C., and Maryland tell The Washington Post they're planning to sue the president for violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, that language that says the president can't accept gifts from foreign governments, though state AGs say they're in a better position to sue than some private actors because the convention centers in their states are actually losing out to Trump hotels and Trump resorts.

Comey's dramatic testimony drew invective from his former boss on Twitter, with Trump dismissing him as a leaker on Friday and a coward on Sunday.

Sessions recused himself from the inquiry in March after media reports that he had been in two previously undisclosed meetings past year with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

Trump's tendency to bring up the Russian Federation investigation, whether by insulting Comey or hinting at the existence of tapes, has created a headache for Republicans who want to focus on the party's priorities such as healthcare and tax reform. Either way, senators said he would face pointed questions not only about his contacts with Russian officials, but also about his conversations with James B. Comey, the ousted F.B.I. director.
