Trump Administration Revokes Program To Protect Immigrant Parents

Andrew Cummings | 18 June, 2017, 02:23

The program, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, known as DAPA, had never actually taken effect after being signed in 2014.

Mariana is one of thousands of young people protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows children of undocumented parents to work and study in the USA without fear of deportation.

On Thursday, Secretary John Kelly of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued an official memorandum rescinding DAPA.

Trump during his campaign had vowed to eliminate the program, which allows people brought to the country illegally as children to stay if they complete certain steps. The program was launched in 2012 and has protected about 787,000 young immigrants from deportation. A federal court agreed and blocked the administration from enforcing the policy. What's more, this move under the Trump administration came on the fifth anniversary of DAPA's sister policy, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The rescinded memo purported to provide a path for illegal aliens with a US citizen or lawful permanent resident child to be considered for deferred action.

A Downing Street source said the talks had been "constructive" but refused to put a timescale on when they would conclude. Talks prior to the election being called had failed to reach an agreement.

According to The New York Times, the DACA program decision impacts about 800,000 people in the U.S.

President Donald Trump will no longer seek the immediate removal of individuals who came to the USA illegally as children, his Department of Homeland Security confirmed late Thursday night.

That said, sweeping executive actions, whether by Obama or Trump, are no way to solve America's immigration problems.

"We will not let President Trump rip apart families, and we will continue to fight for the 11 million undocumented families until we secure permanent legislative relief", he said in a statement. "The preservation of DACA is a tribute to the strength of the Dreamer movement". President Barack Obama personally lobbied Trump to keep the policy in place during their Oval Office meeting shortly after the election. The guidance adds that work permits will not be terminated before they are set to expire. The White House continues to study DACA.

In early 2015, Attorney General Paxton led a 26-state coalition lawsuit against the Obama administration that succeeded in putting DAPA on hold as the case worked its way through the courts. "Many working class Americans voted for President Trump because of his promise to combat illegal immigration and secure U.S.jobs for American workers". In an Associated Press interview in April, Trump said his administration is "not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals" and said, "The dreamers should rest easy".
