The Mummy fails at the domestic box office, only makes $31.5 million

Tom Cruise's The Mummy only banked $32 million on its opening weekend ($10 million less than Brendan Fraser's earned when it debuted in 1999 when ticket prices were more than 30% cheaper).

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.' box-office sensation "Wonder Woman" took 57.2 million Dollars from 4,165 theatres.

Meanwhile, with weekday returns, Wonder Woman is now at $205 million in North America alone, and its strong hold bodes well for a long, prosperous run over many weeks.

The poor North American opening for "The Mummy", which cost an estimated $125 million to produce, meant a weak start for Universal's ballyhooed "Dark Universe".

Universal is daring to go where superheroes successfully tread these days, trying to fashion a connected cinematic universe out of its classic monsters, including the Mummy, the Invisible Man and Mr. Hyde. The movie is a much-needed win for Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe Superhero titles.

Apple WWDC 2017 Highlights: Whats new?
Much as I'd like Apple to introduce an actually modern laptop at that £950 price , I suppose this is better than nothing. Arguably the most interesting of these developments is the ability to drag and drop files from one location to another.

But critics slammed the film, directed by Alex Kurtzman; it has a dismal 17 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it might have come up short domestically, Cruise is still a big worldwide movie star, and The Mummy pulled in more than $142 million.

"Every movie is it's own DNA", Duncan Clark, Universal's president of global distribution commented about the "Dark Universe". Granted, it opened in over 60 countries to garner that amount of cash, but still, it brings the film's total box office to $174 million after one weekend. Several publications even called it the worst Tom Cruise movie ever, even if it has recently posted the highest opening weekend for the actor. The next movie to come out from the Dark Universe is Bride of Frankenstein to be directed by Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast). It also earned $873.2 million worldwide from a $250 million budget.

The other notable debuts included the critically acclaimed A24 horror feature "It Comes at Night", which crept up to a $6 million first weekend for director Trey Edward Shults. The film has far exceeded industry expectations and it is on par with the 2013 release of Man of Steel, in terms of box office success.

The rest of the top 5 has Pirates of the Caribbean 5 at number 3 with $45 million, Baywatch at number 4 with $15 million and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie at number 5 with $14 million.

US$6 million in tickets.
