Today the world is celebrating International Olympic Day as the countdown continues until the start of the 2018 winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"If the neighboring countries in north-east Asia, including North and South Korea, can host the World Cup together, it would help to create peace", Moon said.

The idea reflects a larger effort by South Korea's newly elected President Moon Jae-in, who seeks to revive the old "sunshine policy" whereby South Korea makes overtures of friendship and unity to the North to ease military tensions.

North Korean officials have reportedly declared the country's intent to take part in the Olympics after they boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in South Korea's capital Seoul.

Speaking after the test, Moon said while he prefers dialog with Pyongyang, such a stance is only possible "if we have strong defense".

Chang Ung arrived in South Korea to attend the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Taekwondo Championships starting Saturday in Muju, 240 kilometers south of Seoul.

One idea was for North Korea to host some skiing competitions at the Games.

GOP eyes Senate health care vote next week, amid grumbling
Another report from the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services predicted that number would be 13 million. The Congressional Budget Office is then expected to release its non-partisan analysis of the bill early next week.

In South Korea, however, NBC would not be inviting guests to the Games and would instead be hosting them in the US ski town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Zenkel said. "But I am here as an International Olympic Committee member of North Korea, and representing the IOC".

But the suggestion will probably be panned by the United States, which has taken a very critical stance against North Korea in recent weeks.

The two teams regularly play each other in friendlies and at worldwide competitions.

The two countries have co-hosted several sporting exchanges this year, including a women's soccer tournament in Pyongyang and a women's hockey competition in South Korea.

"That is not something the two sides can decide", said Mr Jang told reporters, when he was asked about North Korea potentially hosting Olympic events.

John Delury, a professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Relations, said the games were an appropriate venue to at least try to mend ties.
