Rain saves Australia in Champions Trophy wash-out

Isaac Mcdaniel | 05 June, 2017, 08:38

Steve Smith did not mince his words after Australia's Champions Trophy opener with New Zealand ended in a rain-ruined no result, tearing into his bowlers for an "ordinary" display and admitting the weather in Birmingham had seen his side "get away with one".

England launched the tournament, which features the world's top eight ODI teams, with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at The Oval on Thursday.

Australia were 53 for three after nine overs chasing an adjusted total of 235 in 33 overs, when rain came.

Smith was particularly displeased with the bowling effort of his pacers early on in the New Zealand innings.

The Blackcaps were on course for a score well above 300 while Williamson was at the crease during a well-judged inning of exactly 100. The run against New Zealand would have done the bowlers a world of good.

Earlier Josh Hazlewood was a standout with career best figures of 6/52, but Mitch Starc was wayward in his return to global cricket, Pat Cummins (1/67) was smashed early and John Hastings (2/69) late as the Kiwis piled on 291 in their allotted 46 overs.

Having fully recovered from a foot injury, the veteran player Starc will be the leader of the cricket match and when last time he led the match at 2006 and 2009 emerged as winners. His fellwo pacer Trent Boult had struck the first blow for New Zealand, picking up the wicket of the unsafe David Warner in the sixth over.

In reply, the Aussies lost the wickets of David Warner, Aaron Finch, and Moises Henriques with the impressive New Zealand right-arm quick Adam Milne taking two scalps.

The all-rounder was followed off the pitch by the rest of the players though as the heavens opened again to curtail the match.

The top two in each of the two groups of four will go forward to the semi-finals.

Apart from him, Luke Ronchi and Ross Taylor scored 65 and 46 runs respectively.

Rain played spoilsport in what was shaping up be an enthralling encounter, forcing the Group A Champions Trophy match between Australia and New Zealand to be abandoned here on Friday. "We need to keep that going and move on".

Starc bowled yet another quick over however was hit for four of the second ball by Ronchi.

Cummins, however, had already proved expensive by the time rain stopped play with New Zealand 67 for one midway through the 10th over.

Blackcaps pacemen Tim Southee and Trent Boult are proven performers in England, but Southee said ahead of the tournament: "We know the conditions, but you can´t rely on that".

But Williamson didn't add to his ton, through a combination of confused running and clever fielding from Henriques at backward point then Cummins at the stumps, found well short.

Broom fell for 14 soon after, while James Neesham, Corey Anderson, Adam Milne and Mitchell Santner all fell for a combined 33 runs as New Zealand's innings came apart.

Poor performance: Smith was quite clear that he needs his bowlers to do better if they are to win their next match.
