Portland train stabbing suspect has courtroom outburst

Andrew Cummings | 01 June, 2017, 01:50

The Portland train attack suspect spent his first appearance in court spouting off nonsensically about free speech and being a national hero - yelling, "You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism".

In a previous statement, Fletcher told the city of Portland's Muslim community that they "are loved".

The homicide detective investigating the triple stabbing on a Portland MAX train says in court documents that surveillance and cellphone videos show Christian cutting the three victims with a knife.

"I am praying you will use your leadership to do so", she posted on Facebook. And we've been told that there could be additional charges in the coming days.

The man was telling the girls to go back to Saudi Arabia and that they didn't belong in America, she said.

When the passengers intervened, the violence began. "He just wanted to help people", Erik Best said. "I got stabbed in the neck on my way to work, randomly, by a stranger I don't know, for trying to just be a nice person", he said. He was released from the hospital Monday and attended the hearing, where a scar on his neck was visible.

A group of about 20 people or so gathered outside the courtroom Tuesday and could be heard yelling things like "bigot" and "murderer" throughout the proceedings. He is accused of aggravated murder, intimidation - the state equivalent of a hate crime - and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Destinee and her friend moved to the back of the train.

"We're just here to say thank you", Ms. Hudson said. "We really appreciate what's being done for us and for the victims".

But he choked up when he spoke about the two men who died, Namkai-Meche and Best.

"Although they survived, their lives will never be the same, as they were being the targets of hate", the campaign's creators said.

"I'm not a hero, nobody special", he told KPTV, on Tuesday. They fearlessly risked their lives for two young women who were threatened by an act of bigotry & terror.

Authorities say Christian started verbally abusing two young women, including one wearing a hijab.

Last Friday, Christian allegedly stabbed two men to death and injured another man badly aboard a Portland metro train.

The animal was not put down after her family said Ms McClay "would not have wanted it harmed" and it eventually died in 2016. Rosa was declared dead at the zoo, Cambridgeshire Police later confirmed, in what has been dubbed a "freak accident".

Fletcher also said Portlanders had to protect each other.

In court documents, prosecutors say Christian confessed while in the back seat of a police auto after his arrest.

"I don't have that feeling like it can't happen here - the way people talk about Portland - because we've got racism. It's a gut check for everywhere-and absolutely for Portland", said Christopher Douglas, who stopped at a makeshift memorial to the slain men.

TEMPLETON: First I think that it's insensitive to the local Muslim community.

Christian is being held without bail.

Also killed Friday night was Rick Best, a city worker who spent 23 years in the military.

Police spokesman Pete Simpson confirmed that the man in the KOIN video is Christian.

She said it all happened so fast.

"He was saying that Muslims should die", Ms. Hudson said. "Portland police have a robust unit against white supremacists".

Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, faces two counts of felony aggravated murder and other charges.

Patriot Prayer group leader Joey Gibson said Christian had shown up at a rally on April 29 with a baseball bat and had made the Nazi salute. While there, Christian is reported to have chanted the N-word while draping himself in an American flag. You got no safe place.

It was confirmed the man in the videos was Mr. Christian and investigators were aware of them.

Christian served prison time after holding up employees at a convenience store with a gun in 2002, court records show.
