Pence Hires Outside Counsel to Handle Russia Probe Questions

Trump under investigation for possible obstruction of justice: Washington Post Florida International University prepares for Vice President Mike Pence's visit

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence stepped up Washington's war of words with Venezuela on Thursday, telling Latin American leaders the country was a prime example of what happens when democracy is undermined, and urging the region to condemn its government.

Cullen is a seasoned federal criminal attorney with experience relevant to the assignment - he has handled politically sensitive case work as special counsel to Senator Paul Tribe during the Iran-Contra investigation, he is a former U.S. Attorney, and he served on the House staff for Rep. Caldwell Butler (R-VA) during the Watergate investigation.

Pence's decision comes several weeks after the president hired his longtime personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz, to handle Russia-related inquiries.

That's according to a statement from Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen.

He dismissed as "phony" the idea that his campaign colluded with any Russian effort to sway the 2016 election.

Aides said the vice president had considered several candidates before settling on Cullen and made his final decision earlier this week.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether anyone on Trump's campaign, or associated with it, with him or with any of his businesses, may have had any illegal dealings with Russian officials or others with ties to the Kremlin, said one US official familiar with the rough outlines of the probe who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Washington Post first reported Pence was hiring counsel. The vice president was kept in the dark for almost two weeks about Flynn's false statements before learning the truth in a Post report.

Mueller is also now investigating whether President Trump obstructed the investigation at all.

The public comments were followed by a series of private meetings at which officials were expected to discuss such matters as whether the US will extend the temporary legal residency status of about 200,000 migrants from Central America who have been allowed to stay in the country without becoming citizens for almost 20 years. Of course, as a public servent, Pence's salary has been paid for by taxpayers for years but I suppose we're just splitting hairs at that point.

A sitting vice president choosing to hire an outside lawyer is not without precedent.
