Nishikori retires injured, Khachanov to play Rublev in Halle

Isaac Mcdaniel | 25 June, 2017, 02:25

Top-seeded Roger Federer overcame a stern challenge from Mischa Zverev on Thursday before recording a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory in a second-round match at the ATP Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. "I had lots of chances to even go up a double break in the second set".

Fourth seed Zverev has already won three titles this year and stayed in the hunt for another by coming from behind to defeat Richard Gasquet 4-6 6-4 6-3. I was calm serving out the first and second sets.

He will face rapidly rising talent Karen Khachanov, who won his all-Russian quarter-final against Andrey Rublev 7-6 (8) 4-6 6-3 to reach his first tour semi-final of the year.

He persisted and carved out two more, winning the tiebreak by whipping a crosscourt backhand victor on his fourth set point.

Zverev's first two matches of the tournament were fairly comfortable affairs, against Paolo Lorenzi and his countryman Phillip Kohlschreiber, who he defeated in the first and second rounds respectively. Federer has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a match in which he produced 11 aces.

Federer, ranked No. 5 in the world, lost to Zverev in last year's Halle semifinals but beat him last year in Rome.

Roger Federer continued his march towards a record-extending ninth Gerry Weber Open title in Halle by reaching the final where he will play home star Alexander Zverev. Federer advanced when Khachanov lifted a backhand long on match point. He did not face a break point.

Khachanov will now play the victor of the match between fellow Russians Mikhail Youzhny and Andrey Rublev.

However, the young shuttler, who has had very little experience on grass at the highest level, might find it hard to match Federer's class in today's big clash.
