The world's current population of 7.6 billion will balloon to 9.8 billion in 2050, with India's numbers to surpass China's in just seven years, a United Nations report said Wednesday.

"In roughly seven years, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China", the report said, calling it a notable finding.

The report, titled "World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision", said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people. Children under 15 years make up about one quarter of the world's inhabitants.

India's population may eventually see a decline in the half century after 2050 to 1.51 billion by 2100 but it will still be the most populous country in the world.

The life expectancy at birth will be 71 years in India in 2025-2030, the report said.

The report by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Population Division forecasts that the current world population of almost 7.6 billion will increase to 8.6 billion by 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.

The report by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Population Division released Wednesday said roughly 83 million people are being added to the world's population every year.

The U.N. said that among the 10 largest countries, Nigeria is growing the fastest. Between 2015 and 2050, the top net receivers of worldwide migrants (more than 100,000 annually) are projected to be the US, Germany, Canada, UK, Australia and Russian Federation.

Other countries in the category are India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Uganda and Indonesia.

The world population is now at least 7.6 billion, up from 7.4 billion a year ago, spurred by the relatively high levels of fertility in developing countries - despite an overall drop in the number of children people have around the globe, revealed World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision. During the 2010-2015 period, fertility was below the replacement level in 83 countries comprising 46 percent of the world's population, it said.

The report said the current world population, which is 7.6 billion, is expected to increase to 8.6 billion in the next 13 years.

In addition to slowing population growth, low fertility levels lead to an older population, the report noted.

Globally, the number of people aged 60 or more is predicted to more than triple by 2100, rising to 3.1 billion from 962 million. "Progress in reducing under-five mortality has been substantial and far-reaching in recent years".
