Nadal Cruises into Third Round, 74-2 at Roland Garros

Isaac Mcdaniel | 01 June, 2017, 01:49

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and nine-time victor Rafael Nadal moved into the third round of the French Open with identical wins in straight sets on Wednesday.

Those are critical numbers for Rafael Nadal after the Spaniard waltzed past Dutchman Robin Haase on Day 4 of Roland Garros, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

"I was more or less under control during the whole match, so I'm very happy". The former world number one proved that he could do better when he secured his service game with a hold to love, leveling the scores.

"I think I did a lot of things well this afternoon".

The 30-year-old Spaniard will face Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in the third round.

Nearly as many cameras were trained on the retired American tennis star as were trained on Djokovic throughout the latter's 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 dismantling of Portugal's Joao Sousa.

He will next play Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, who made the third round of a Major for the first time, for a place in the last 16.

"I think the first two sets went very well, the third was was more hard", said Djokovic.

Despite being outclassed, Haase was able to see the amusing side: "At the beginning I was way better", the Dutchman said.

Johnson will next face sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem, who moved into the third round with a 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 win over Simone Bolelli of Italy.

Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin sailed through, but French hopes suffered a huge blow as 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga crashed out to Renzo Olivo in his opening match.

There was a dramatic encounter on Court 6 where 25th seed Steve Johnson defeated young Croatian Borna Coric 6-2 7-6 (10-8) 3-6 7-6 (8-6).

He also admitted after momentary lapses in concentration in the second and third sets that he would need to improve if he was to win his second successive title. After pulling back from 40-0 to huge cheers from the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, Tsonga missed a chance to level at 5-5 before Olivo took his fourth match point to win 7-5 6-4 6-7 (6/8) 6-4.

"I knew it was going to be a battle out there", said Muguruza, who beat Serena Williams in last year's final. I think my serve worked better than two days ago. "So I won the match".

The two-time Wimbledon champion, who was seeded 15th, lost 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

"I'm disappointed, for sure". "I was just hanging in there, being aggressive and waiting for my moment".

"But I really fought. The mission is completed and I am happy". "The fairytale ended. Now, in upcoming weeks, I think it will be business as usual".

Seven-time grand slam victor Venus Williams cruised past Kurumi Nara with a 6-3 6-1 win to book a third round spot.

The 36-year-old turned back the clock with a vintage display to set up a meeting with Belgium's Elise Mertens.
