May vows to stay on as British prime minister

Andrew Cummings | 15 June, 2017, 02:29

For the Conservatives, election results have been shocking since they lost 12 seats of sitting MPs forcing them to go for a coalition government.

Making the announcement outside 10 Downing Street after a 20-minute audience with the Queen yesterday, a solemn Mrs May kept her speech short, saying that she will form a government "that will provide certainty" and lead the country into the complex Brexit negotiations while sticking to the timetable.

The development is an embarrassing turn for the British Prime Minister, who called the vote three years earlier than required, in a bid to give her a strong position in Brexit negotiations.

May held talks Friday with Arlene Foster, leader of the DUP, ahead of making the short auto journey to Buckingham Palace to outline her plan to Queen Elizabeth.

To stay in power, the Conservatives are seeking support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

Sterling plunged against the dollar and the euro as the election result created even more uncertainty over the whole Brexit process.

Labour's Corbyn, reveling in a storming campaign performance after pundits had pronounced his party all but dead, said May should step down and that he wanted to form a minority government.

Following the election, May faced backlash over the failure of the Conservative party, with a number of politicians - including Corbyn - suggesting that she has to resign.

Even some Conservatives have called on her to consider her position after her snap election gamble failed.

Britain's best-selling Sun newspaper said senior members of her party had vowed to get rid of May but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest now could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power. Youngsters and elderly joined together yesterday, 'which made them possible to conquer 261 seats compared to the 318 of the ruling Conservative Party.

"I'm sorry for all those candidates and hard working party workers who weren't successful", May said on Friday after a surprise resurgence by the main opposition Labour Party under its leftwing leader Jeremy Corbyn.

John Curtice, who oversees the exit poll for a consortium of broadcasters, said Friday that the Conservatives' final tally might be a bit higher than 314, but it was extremely unlikely they would get a majority.

After the election, the right-wing UK Independence Party, which helped drive Brexit, was left with no seats in Parliament. "This is a very bad moment for the Conservative Party, and we need to take stock", Conservative lawmaker Anna Soubry said. Some Brexit advocates want the U.K.to reject terms offered by the EU and possibly leave the union without an agreement.

Labour wants to challenge the Prime Minister's authority after she was embarrassed by failing to secure a House of Commons majority in Thursday's general election. He said it was impossible to predict whether she would still be prime minister at the end of the year. But the election result meant it was unclear whether her plan to take Britain out of the bloc's single market and customs union could still be pursued.

It's unclear whether the Brexit process can be stopped, as the United Kingdom already has informed the European Council it's leaving.
