London Bridge car attack, nearby stabbings 'terrorist incidents,' police say

The president later shared support for the people of the United Kingdom, writing on Twitter that, "Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U.K., we will be there".

Police said armed officers were also responding to reports of stabbings nearby.

It also sparked harrowing memories of an attack on Westminster Bridge when 52-year-old British Muslim convert Khalid Masood rammed his vehicle into pedestrians before crashing into the barriers surrounding parliament and then stabbing a police officer to death.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley has released a statement, confirming that six people were killed in relation to the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks, as well as the three attackers who were shot and killed by police.

The attack came more than a week after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in the northern city of Manchester and days ahead of the June 8 election, where security is a major theme. In March, four people were killed in London after Khalid Masood rammed his vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing a policeman outside the Houses of Parliament.

No-one has so far claimed responsibility for the terror attacks in central London.

Federal Labor MP Sam Dastyari says he was at a restaurant near the attack and was evacuated past the "horrific events".

On London Bridge, in the heart of the capital, a van swerved off the road into a crowd of pedestrians, the BBC reported, citing a witness.

LANGFITT: Absolutely, and I think that coming - three incidents like this, you know, there was a long stretch where London did not face big sort of terrorist attacks.

Alex Shellum was in The Mudlark pub, close to London Bridge, at around 10pm when a woman in her early 20s "staggered into the pub". He said at least one person was badly injured, his bloodied body on the ground.

Transport for London says busy London Bridge station has been closed at the request of police.

Police and emergency services were called to London Bridge shortly after 10pm on Saturday, amid reports that a white van had hit pedestrians.

Police confirmed that they responded to a report of a "vehicle collision with pedestrians" at London Bridge at 10:08 p.m.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said the incidents are being treated as a "potential act of terrorism".

The drivers reportedly got off the van to stab people in the nearby Borough Market area of bars and restaurants.

Police say arrests have been made.

"We were standing outside one of the exits at Monument Station", she said, referring to an Underground station just north of the bridge. Armed officers were sent to the scenes and shots were fired.

Eyewitnesses told BBC home affairs correspondent Tom Symonds they saw people getting out of the van after the attack on the bridge and running towards Borough Market.

It was the third terrorist attack to strike the United Kingdom this year, after a man drove a vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in March.

"It looked like he was aiming for groups of people".

An eyewitness tells Sky News he saw people who seemed to have been run over and people being placed in an ambulance covered in blankets. He hit about two people in front of me and then three behind. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said President Trump has also been briefed on the situation.

Two suspected terror incidents are happening in London this evening.

Police held people inside bars and restaurants for their own safety as police cars screamed past.

On Sunday, Grande will be joined by a host of other musicians, including Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Coldplay, for a charity concert in Manchester to raise money for the victims and their families.
