Kushner asked to 'lay low' amid Russian interference reports

Kelly defends plan for Russia back channel as a 'good thing' Trump returns home and fires up Twitter amid worsening scandal

White House senior aide Jared Kushner wanted to set up a direct line of communication to Russian President Vladimir Putin after Donald Trump won the US election, The New York Times reported.

President Trump tells the New York Times he has "total confidence" in his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

President Donald Trump is considering overhauling his White House staff and bringing back top campaign strategists, frustrated by what he views as his team's inability to contain the burgeoning crisis involving alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump added in the statement that Kushner was "respected by virtually everyone", and was busy working to help save the country "billions of dollars". "In addition to that, and perhaps more importantly, he is a very good person". President Donald Trump's son-in-law is now under FBI scrutiny as part of the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Current and former US officials said Mr. Kushner's activities, like those of many others around Mr. Trump, are under scrutiny as part of the investigation.

The report, which was retweeted by President Donald Trump, quotes a sole anonymous source claiming that during the December meeting "the Russians broached the idea of using a secure line between the Trump administration and Russia, not Kushner".

News of the discussion was first reported by The Washington Post.

There has been no denial of the reports by the White House and a number of senior administration officials backed Mr Kushner over the weekend.

Could Jared be the mole in the White House?

The White House has denied that Trump pressured Comey in any way, though the Federal Bureau of Investigation director is believed to have written detailed memos on his discussions with the president that indicate the opposite.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly says he doesn't know if those reports are true but describes back-channel communications as a "good thing".

Lawyers for Kushner said he was willing to talk with federal and congressional investigators about his foreign contacts. the AP reported.

"Just because you have a back channel, if indeed that's what Jared was after, doesn't mean that he then keeps everything secret", Kelly said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

"Any channel of communication, back or otherwise, with a country like Russian Federation is a good thing", Kelly said.

Also, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is also reportedly looking into a December meeting between Kushner and a former intelligence officer appointed by Vladimir Putin as CEO of a Russian state-owned bank that is under US sanctions and was implicated in a 2015 espionage case.
