Top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Junaid Mattoo and his accomplice were killed on Friday in an encounter with security forces in in Arwani village of Bijbihara in Anantnag District of south Kashmir. A Station House Officer of Achhabal area was among the victims of the attack.

Over two dozen other protesters were injured in the protests.

Reports said that the civilians were heading towards Ahem Sharif shrine for Friday prayers when they came under fire at a barricade erected by soldiers in Chek Reshipora village of the district.

Earlier, unknown terrorists had shot dead a police constable when he was working in his fields at Bogund village in south Kashmir district of Kulgam.

As the fighting raged, thousands of people from neighboring villages marched to Arwani in an attempt to help the trapped rebels escape.

Nisar Ahmed, along with Matto, was also killed.
