How Michael Bloomberg is defying Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate accords

Kelvin Reese | 04 June, 2017, 07:11

Before President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate agreement on Thursday, he said he'd like to share an update on the country's "tremendous economic progress since Election Day on November 8".

But as the Times of India noted Friday, total foreign aid to India amounted to just $3.1 billion in 2015, the year the accord was inked, with us aid to the country weighing in at around $100 million.

The architects of the Paris agreement included Christiana Figueres, who until recently led the UNFCCC.

The U.S. might have walked away from the Paris Agreement, but that doesn't mean all its cities and states will do the same.

Governors from New York, California, and Washington have signed onto the effort, according to media reports. Numerous other countries haven't spent anything, and many of them will never pay one dime.

In a conversation with the L.A. Times, Governor Brown responded to Trump's announcement that the USA would be withdrawing from the pact, saying, "It cannot stand, it's not right and California will do everything it can to not only stay the course, but to build more support - in other states, in other provinces, in other countries".

Under the landmark Paris accord, rich and poor countries committed to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases generated by burning fossil fuels. He criticized the pact as a job-killer that put the United States at an unfair advantage.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a mournful email to staff Thursday expressing his deep displeasure in President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate deal.

"Hopefully people can keep it in perspective", he said, calling Trump's move "a policy decision". Pruitt was asked at least four times by reporters about whether Trump believes in climate change, or thinks it is a danger, and he gave similar responses each time.

MIT issued the following statement on Thursday, June 1 2017.

The United States never even ratified the now-defunct Kyoto accord, the forerunner of the Paris agreement, because there was no political will in America to do so.

Bloomberg, who is the UN Secretary-General's special envoy for cities and climate change, said the U.S. had led the world on emission reductions over the past decade.

Most environmental experts were not surprised to earn that Donald Trump was going to pull the United States out of the Paris Accord on climate change.
